Our breast imaging and diagnostic services
Breast screenings are the first step in evaluating breast disorders, and a mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer for most women of screening age. Our center offers breast imaging and diagnostic services that help us identify early signs of cancer and other abnormalities.
Types of breast health screenings and diagnostic services
Depending on your needs and health risks, we offer different types of procedures and imaging capabilities. Some are diagnostic tests performed if we find a breast abnormality, and some are designed for women with denser breast tissue.
Breast biopsy
If your symptoms or imaging test suggest you might have breast cancer, you may need a breast biopsy. During a biopsy, tissue or sometimes fluid is removed from the suspicious area. The removed cells are examined under a microscope and further tested to check for the presence of breast cancer.
Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
A breast MRI uses magnetic fields to capture multiple images of your breast. According to the American Cancer Society, a screening breast MRI and a yearly mammogram are recommended for certain women at high risk for breast cancer.
Breast ultrasound
This imaging test uses sound waves to look at the inside of your breasts. Ultrasounds can show certain breast changes, such as fluid-filled cysts or lumps, that can be harder to see on mammograms.
Chest X-ray
A chest X-ray may be done to see if the cancer has spread to your lungs. During this exam, you will be exposed to a small amount of radiation.
Computerized tomography (CT) scan
A CT scan is an X-ray technique that makes 2-dimensional slices or cross-sectional images of your body. CT scans are not used routinely to evaluate the breast but can be used to look at the chest and abdomen to see if breast cancer has spread to other organs, like the lungs or liver.
Mammogram
We recommend you start getting regular mammograms at 40 years old. A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of your breasts used to detect breast cancer. For many women, mammograms are the best way to find or detect breast cancer early when it’s small and easier to treat.
A physician referral is not required to schedule an annual screening mammogram. Walk-ins are welcome for mammograms. For more information, call us at (361) 761-3532.
3D mammography
A 3D mammogram provides a clearer image of your breast tissue and may uncover breast cancer that would otherwise be hidden by overlying breast tissue.
Breast cancer services
If you or a loved one is diagnosed with breast cancer, our dedicated breast cancer specialists will be there to provide personalized care and support every step of the treatment journey. In our oncology program, your care team includes medical and radiation oncologists, nurses, radiologists and reconstructive surgeons.
We also have breast nurse navigators who coordinate your care and act as a bridge between you and your doctors. They will ensure you and your family understand your condition and treatment plan. Our nurse navigator will also connect you and your family with support groups and educational resources.
Breast cancer warning signs
Quickly recognizing breast cancer symptoms or signs can also aid in early detection. Some warning signs of breast cancer are:
- Breast lump or hardening
- Changes in breast's shape or size
- Newly inverted nipple
- Nipple discharge
- Pain in any area of the breast
- Red, dry or flaking nipple or skin
Genetic testing
We offer genetic testing to determine if you have a gene mutation that puts you at increased risk of developing breast cancer. Genetic testing isn't done routinely, but your doctor may recommend it based on your family history and personal situation. If a cancer diagnosis is reached, the results of your genetic test can help you and your physician determine the best path forward for treatment.
